Congratulations to Wolfgang Holnthoner on his recent habilitation at Medical University of Vienna!
Wolfgang is the head of the endothelium and vascularization group at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Experimental and Clinical Traumatology. In his thesis “Endothelial cells and their molecular functions in angiogenesis and vascularization”, he describes the role of endothelial cells in the formation and growth of blood and lymphatic vessels.
Vascularization is a crucial aspect of successful tissue regeneration, as almost all tissue types rely on the cell coated tubular networks for supply with oxygen and nutrients. In their studies, Wolfgang and his group are using endothelial cells isolated from peripheral blood or adipose tissue to understand the mechanisms of neoangiogenesis and develop vascularization strategies to be used in a clinical setting.
