TU Wien has emerged as Austria’s leading university in patent applications, driven by strong industry-focused research and technological innovation. A recent study by the European Patent Office ranks Austria 6th among 34 European countries in university-originated patent applications per capita, with TU Wien leading nationally, having filed 665 patents from 2000 to 2020.
On October 29, Science Minister Martin Polaschek visited TU Wien’s 3D printing lab, a hub of innovative research often resulting in new patents. Members of the Austrian Cluster for Tissue Regeneration, including Stampfl and Ovsianikov, play a key role in this success.
Prof. Stampfl specializes in precision additive manufacturing using advanced laser technology, enabling precise hardening of liquid materials. Associated Cluster member Lithoz was founded by Stampfl and his doctoral students and is now a global leader in ceramic 3D printing with applications in areas from aerospace to dental technology.
Prof. Ovsianikov heads the 3D Printing and Biofabrication research group, focusing on biomedically oriented, high-resolution 3D printing. His work has earned him significant European Research Council (ERC) grants. Ovsianikov’s team founded the company UpNano, also an Associate Member of our Cluster, to advance biomedical applications in this field.
